Heavy Equipment Operator Training - Level 1 Course  (June 13-July 1, 2022)

This course is for participants that want to learn to operate Dozers, Excavators, Loaders, Graders, and more. Students will learn both in our state-of-the and the land lab/range. This course provides students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required to safely and efficiently operate specific pieces of heavy construction equipment and preventative maintenance and safety.

Course Objectives: Students will be competent in performing and documenting a pre-use safety equipment checklist (Machine Walk-Around), well-versed in various machine controls, perform proper engine start-up and engine shut-down procedures, backing and driving through basic skill maneuvers and comfortably perform real-life scenario construction tasks. Students will have operated, on the land lab/range and the simulators a variety of different pieces of heavy equipment in a real-life setting.

Course Requirements:

● Students must be at least 16 years of age and have parent/guardian consent if under 18

● Students must be able to use a two-way radio to communicate with instructors

● Complete tasks on simulators with an 85% pass rate per exercise

● Maintain 80% attendance

● 9 th grade reading and math abilities

Course Certifications: This is a proficiency-based course where participants will have the opportunity to become certified to operate heavy equipment such as a dozer, excavator, loader, grader, skid steer, and mini excavator. Each person will show the skills needed to gain an introductory or level one certification on each piece of equipment. Once tasks are completed and evaluated, a certificate will be issued by BTI.

Forklift Certification (June 16-17, 2022)

The purpose of this course is to train individuals to become qualified forklift operators. An operator who has the knowledge and skills to operate a Powered Industrial Truck (Forklift) in a safe and professional manner reduces the risk to others and themselves in the workplace.

Course Objectives: Students will learn the essential elements and key points for safe forklift operations. Participants will learn general equipment inspection, maintenance, walk-around procedures, critical safety skills, and knowledge about workplace hazards associated with operating a forklift.

Course Requirements:

● Students must be at least 18 years of age to become forklift certified

● A valid driver’s license is not required

● ½ day course with hands-on skills testing

Course Certifications: BTI will issue a 3-year Forklift Certification upon completing the course and a passing score on the general knowledge and skills tests. 

Traffic Control/Flagger Certification  (June 24, 2022)

The Traffic Control/Flagger’s role is to protect project personnel and provide safe, courteous, and authoritative directions to traffic seeking passage through a work zone. This course will teach students standard flagger control references, proper flagging signals, and procedures for various situations.

Course Requirements:

● Students must be at least 18 years of age

● Ability to stand for extended periods

 ● ½ day course with hands-on and written testing

Course Certifications: Oregon Department of Transportation Traffic Control Flagger certification will be issued upon completing the course and successfully passing the written knowledge test. Certificate is good for 3-years.

Introduction to Truck Driving and Logistics (July 5-7, 2022)

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the trucking industry and provide a general overview of industry regulations and what is required to become a professional driver. This information will include discussing the procedure for obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), possible endorsements, and the workforce demands for varying jobs that require a CDL. As part of this course, participants will become more familiar with commercial vehicles, including the engine controls, various transmission systems, and basic vehicle systems required to operate an oversized truck. BTI’s mobile classroom will provide defensive driving and hands-on operation with a trucking simulator, range exercises, and demonstrations.

First Aid/CPR/AED Certification (July 5, 2022)

This course uses the American Heart Association curriculum taught by BTI’s experienced emergency medical trainer, a certified Wilderness First Responder and Emergency Medical Technician. This course offers students a hands-on experience to learn the basic knowledge necessary to respond to emergencies when they arise.

Course Objectives: The objective of this course is to prepare participants to handle the most common life-threatening emergencies. Students will earn the basics of recognizing emergencies, knowing when to call for help, and performing basic and lifesaving skills. Basic life support skills, including effective chest compressions, use of a bag-mask device, and an AED will be taught.

Course Requirements:

● No minimum age requirement

Course Certifications: Students that have shown the ability to perform CPR, first aid, and use an AED will receive a CPR/First Aid card issued by the American Heart Association. This certification is good for two years.
