In October Mrs. Huffman's second graders buried a trash filled pumpkin and wondered how it would change over time. On Earth Day they set to find out! They discovered that the pumpkin had decomposed, but the garbage still remained. Students learned that natural materials decompose quickly over time but many man-made materials do not and that is why it is important to reduce, reuse and recycle!

Afterschool Program students did an earthquake simulation activity this week as part of their natural disaster preparedness course offered through OSU Extension. Students used toothpicks, marshmallows, and cardboard to build a house that was put to the test on a tray of Jell-O, shaken, and timed for how long it would stay intact.

April is National Autism Awareness and Acceptance month! Autism is a neurological variation. This means that the brains of autistic people work differently than the brains of allistic (non-autistic) people. Not lesser, just different. Please join Dufur School this month in celebrating neurodivergence and learning more about the autistic community by wearing tie-dye this Friday, April 12th, to celebrate the beauty of the diverse spectrum of the human mind!
